Arborealis

Arborealis was awarded the prestigious Print job of the Year at Hemlock Printers in Burnaby BC.  Arborealis has been awarded an excellence award in design and printing in the book category by Applied Arts Magazine. It is featured alongside three other book selections in the 50th anniversary Annual (2006). In a highly-competitive competition, the Anchorage Press publication was recognized for its integrity in fine printing, binding, design, typography and extraordinary combination of photography and poetry.

For a number of years, the photographer Thaddeus Holownia has journeyed to Gros Morne National Park and along Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula putting together the body of work presented in Arborealis. As response to Holownia’s photographs, Peter Sanger has drawn upon his own experience of living, working and traveling in Newfoundland, particularly on the Northern Peninsula, to compose a suite of thirty poems.

Both the photographs and poems re-create the natural, historical, cultural and geographical aspects of Newfoundland’s north-west coast by two independent but interlinked perspectives of imagination. Together, they have counterpointed meditations, a synthesis in the great tradition of combined pictorial, literary, and printing arts.
